UMIA brings scholars, students, and communities together across disciplines to explore the forces shaping Latin America, the Caribbean, and Miami as a dynamic hemispheric crossroads. Through research, teaching, convening, and communicating, the Institute works to promote human, economic, and social development across the region and to strengthen every part of the University of Miami engaged in research relevant to the hemisphere.
A central part of our work is incubating new research on the challenges facing the Americas in the 21st century. Led by our Faculty Research Fellows, current areas of focus include Brazil, Latin American and Caribbean studies, visual culture and politics, and hemispheric health. UMIA also supports major international efforts such as the Lancet Commission on Cancer and Health Systems and the Lancet Commission on Gender-based Violence and Maltreatment of Young People.
Throughout the year, the Institute hosts conversations, symposia, research lunches, and special presentations, and supports faculty and students through grants and the UMIA Distinguished Graduate Fellows program. Together, these efforts advance UM’s growth as a Hemispheric University.
All are welcome to join these efforts.
