Rapid coastal land cover change through to tourism development has had devastating and costly impacts on coastal ecosystems globally. Small islands need better tools to evaluate coastal development in terms of ecological sustainability, especially with rising sea level. A simple conceptual model combined with real field assessments of flooding and hurricane impacts on island development illustrates important trends linking ecosystem services to economic viability.
